One of the best daily Ayurvedic routines for a wonderful sense of health and well-being is Abhyanga – a full body oil massage.

Ancient texts and modern Ayurvedic teaching both praise the benefits of giving yourself a DAILY oil massage from head to toe. This nourishes the skin, eases muscle tension and relieves fatigue. At the same time Abhyanga pacifies and balances the Doshas and aids truly restful sleep.

Abhyanga eases and enhances all parts of the body. Some believe this daily routine will promote longevity as it balances and soothes the entire body. Circulation is stimulated as muscles are toned. Joints are lubricated and aches and pains are pushed gently away.

The holistic approach of Ayurveda is encapsulated by the simultaneous effects on both body and mind, on the external and internal and on behaviour and emotions. Abhyanga builds bridges across such boundaries.

A full body massage on a DAILY basis manages to aid restful sleep whilst at the same time increasing mental alertness when you awake. Impurities and toxins are eliminated from the skin, nails and hair. This is especially
important due to increased levels of pollution. Tension also disappears
whilst stamina increases and leaves you ready to face the day.

Abhyanga pays special attention to the largest organ of the human body – namely your skin. Various healing qualities in the oils used are absorbed which then allow your whole body to function more efficiently. Pay homage to your natural “packaging”. The relationship between DAILY Abhyanga and a well-nourished healthy person is clear.

Traditionally the Ayurvedic massage is performed first thing in the morning prior to a bath or shower. This allows toxins that may have accumulated overnight to be released and eliminated. A fresh start to the day. However, Abhyanga is a great way to reward and benefit yourself at ANY time of the day. Say ‘Thank You’ to your skin every day and ease your mind. 😀

Psyllium Husk

Sat Isabgol

Isabgol is an Ayurvedic herb used primarily to treat digestive issues. It’s most commonly taken throughout India as a home remedy for constipation. While Isabgol can be used effectively as a mild laxative, it similarly works wonders for cleansing the gut, by removing all undigested food, fat, sugars and toxins from the GI tract. If you ever feel the need to give your digestive system a reboot/detox, then this is the herb for you!

Psyllium husk is a natural form of dietary fibre, and let’s be honest, many of us don’t get enough fibre in our daily diets! While there’s no substitute for receiving fibre through the food you eat, (i.e. eating fruit and veg) Isabgol can be taken on the side as a 100% natural and convenient means to boost your daily fibre intake.

Psyllium husk has also been proclaimed as being a weight loss supplement, because it suppresses your appetite; the result of its bulking effect when mixed with water/fluid. If used in this way, then it’s best to be taken 30 minutes before meal times to feel the effects.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, Isabgol has a rasa (taste) that is sweet, an action that is cooling and a vipaka (post-digestive effect) that is also sweet. It’s pacifying for Pitta and Vata, but can aggravate Kapha, so Kaphas should only use small amounts in moderation as required.

How to take?

With Water

Mix 1-2 teaspoons of Isabgol in a glass of water (at least 250ml) stir and drink quickly. Just remember that psyllium husk absorbs lots of water (approx. 14x times it’s weight), so make sure you always drink enough water, both during and after consuming.

Sprinkle on your oats and into your smoothies.

Some people find it difficult to drink the gloopy texture that the husks form when mixed in water. As an alternative, consider sprinkling 1-2 teaspoons onto your cereal, granola or porridge and/or mix into your smoothies and shakes.

Psyllium husk has become increasingly popular recently as a low-cal substitute for flour and breadcrumbs used in baking. It’s also great for gluten-free recipes, which require an agent that replicates the ‘binding’ qualities of gluten.

Psyllium husk contains no animal products and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Please consult with your health care practitioner before consuming if you are pregnant or nursing, taking medications, or have a medical condition.

Coffee Grounds Face Scrub

Upcircle Beauty

All of their scrubs are cruelty-free, vegan, natural and up-cycled, because they source used coffee grounds from baristas around London to put into their products. Buff away those dry, dead cells to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth this month.

Organic, Raw & Vegan Chocolate

Conscious Chocolate

In a strict Ayurvedic sense, raw chocolate is suitable for Kaphas in small amounts (for it’s mood enhancing qualities), but we think it would’ve been a bit cruel to remove such a delicious chocolate bar from the Vata and Pitta boxes, so everybody gets to enjoy this one! 😀

Secondly, at Kalsi, we are not like some of the “Ayurvedic Naysayers” out there. Sure, the doshas provide us with dietary guidelines, but rather than following these as a set of absolutes, we think it’s much better to view Ayurveda as a process; an intention or affirmation that you are taking small steps towards self-awareness and self-healing.

The point being, successfully following an Ayurvedic diet is not a matter of sticking to a strict set of dos and don’ts, or getting overly bogged down in the details. In fact, it is often far more helpful to pay attention to the generalities and overarching patterns.

There we said it… RANT OVER and time for EVERYONE to enjoy some chocolate! 🙌

Conscious Chocolates launched from humble beginnings in 2004 and all of their bars are:

free from gluten
free from dairy
free from soya
free from refined sugars
low GI and GL index
suitable for diabetics
suitable for vegans
suitable for raw foodists
suitable for vegetarians
suitable for coeliacs
made with biodegradable and compostable packaging

We have selected the ‘Plain Jane’ bar for Kaphas.

Vatas are getting the “Essential Orange” flavoured bar, which (let’s face it) tastes a million times better than any other chocolate-orange bar on the market, because Conscious use orange essential oils to create the deep flavour!

Pittas can enjoy the “Wild At Heart” bar, which we’ve selected firstly, because we feel it’s a good mantra for “Pitta” (WILD AT HEART 😉). Secondly, the bars are enriched with wild blue-green algae, organic maca and vanilla which all get a thumbs up for pacifying Pitta.

Golden Turmeric Chai

Yogi Tea

One of the most popular Ayurvedic recipes to find it’s way into trendy health magazines nowadays is Golden Milk. Touted for it’s immune boosting powers (largely down to the inclusion of the wonder herb Turmeric) Golden Milk has been enjoyed in India as a health drink for many years.

Traditionally infused with cow’s milk, turmeric and other spices, such as cinnamon and ginger, Golden milk is loaded with antioxidants that will improve your memory and brain function, aid digestion, boost your mood and keep those colds at bay.

What we especially like about this blend from Yogi Teas is that these tea bags can be used to either make Golden Milk, or simply enjoyed as a great herbal brew to aid digestion after a heavy meal. So, whether you choose to mix it with milk, a vegan dairy-alternative or simply splash some hot water over the teabag, we are sure you’ll love this blend.
