Psyllium Husk

Sat Isabgol

Isabgol is an Ayurvedic herb used primarily to treat digestive issues. It’s most commonly taken throughout India as a home remedy for constipation. While Isabgol can be used effectively as a mild laxative, it similarly works wonders for cleansing the gut, by removing all undigested food, fat, sugars and toxins from the GI tract. If you ever feel the need to give your digestive system a reboot/detox, then this is the herb for you!

Psyllium husk is a natural form of dietary fibre, and let’s be honest, many of us don’t get enough fibre in our daily diets! While there’s no substitute for receiving fibre through the food you eat, (i.e. eating fruit and veg) Isabgol can be taken on the side as a 100% natural and convenient means to boost your daily fibre intake.

Psyllium husk has also been proclaimed as being a weight loss supplement, because it suppresses your appetite; the result of its bulking effect when mixed with water/fluid. If used in this way, then it’s best to be taken 30 minutes before meal times to feel the effects.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, Isabgol has a rasa (taste) that is sweet, an action that is cooling and a vipaka (post-digestive effect) that is also sweet. It’s pacifying for Pitta and Vata, but can aggravate Kapha, so Kaphas should only use small amounts in moderation as required.

How to take?

With Water

Mix 1-2 teaspoons of Isabgol in a glass of water (at least 250ml) stir and drink quickly. Just remember that psyllium husk absorbs lots of water (approx. 14x times it’s weight), so make sure you always drink enough water, both during and after consuming.

Sprinkle on your oats and into your smoothies.

Some people find it difficult to drink the gloopy texture that the husks form when mixed in water. As an alternative, consider sprinkling 1-2 teaspoons onto your cereal, granola or porridge and/or mix into your smoothies and shakes.

Psyllium husk has become increasingly popular recently as a low-cal substitute for flour and breadcrumbs used in baking. It’s also great for gluten-free recipes, which require an agent that replicates the ‘binding’ qualities of gluten.

Psyllium husk contains no animal products and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Please consult with your health care practitioner before consuming if you are pregnant or nursing, taking medications, or have a medical condition.

Raw Cacao Chocolate

Om Bar

Ombar have rightfully won the Great Taste Awards for their delicious, natural and raw chocolate bars.  Most commercial chocolate is made nowadays by roasting cacao at a very high heat, which reduces the natural goodness of the product.

The Ombar however goes through a low-temp process, meaning it stays choc-full of the nutrients and rich flavours that nature intended. Made with organic, all-natural ingredients, Ombar is the chocolate you can feel good about eating this month. All Ombars are vegan-friendly, dairy and gluten free, and free of refined sugar.

by Yogi Tea

Kaphas are typically prone to clogging issues. Blocked sinuses, congested skin and breathing difficulties are just some symptoms that can arise from a Kapha imbalance. In this way, we’ve selected this delightful herbal tonic from Yogi Tea this month, that will hopefully clear the airways and help you to “Breathe Deep”.

This amazingly refreshing drink allows you to restore and revive your senses as you sip your way to more vitality and harmony. Breath is essential to our lives. Sometimes just by taking a few deep breaths we can begin to revive and restore a healthy state of mind and body. The Eucalyptus in Yogi Tea’s Breathe Deep gives us the impression that our whole chest is opening from within thereby allowing PRANA (life force) to expand deeper inside us.  We can breathe again like a re-birth. Ayurvedic medicine, as well as other health systems, uses Eucalyptus to aid respiration and to eliminate toxins. Thyme and Basil combined with warming cinnamon and ginger, stimulate and add delicious flavour.  The essence of this tea is ‘Breathing is Life’.
